Sandberg has understood since his earliest short film projects that the best horror films are about grief, and framing an Annabelle story as one of grieving parents was a brilliant decision. Annabelle: Creation ditches its predecessor’s story all together and shows the origin story of the titular doll.

Fury of the Gods really excels when it prioritizes the bond between the siblings. That being said, the film ultimately finds a positive message by showing that there’s room for independence within a family. In fact, the film is at its best when Billy Batson (Asher Angel) is a kid who struggles with the fact that he is growing up.

The plotline involving the villainous Greek gods simply isn’t that interesting or well-explained, despite the engaged performances from Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu. Those looking for epic battles between gods and monsters were able to find them in the Wonder Woman and Aquaman franchises Shazam! occupied a completely different side of the DCEU. While the sequel certainly has more action, humor, and characters than its predecessor, it lacks the same small-scale approach that made the first Shazam! so charming. The film has a lot of charm to it, but it showed that in some cases, bigger does not mean better. Shazam! Fury of the Gods isn’t a bad film by any stretch of the imagination, and its low ranking should only indicate the overall quality of Sandberg’s output.
